The Program

YVAPE is a free educational program with phone coaching support for students who have been vaping at school. YVAPE is available to California public middle and high schools who will enroll students instead of alternative disciplinary action for vaping. YVAPE is designed to provide a positive experience for the student and help them think through their vaping behavior.

School Administrators
Step 1: Eligibility

Determine if the student is eligible for YVAPE. For a student to be eligible, the answer should be yes to all of these questions:

  1. Was the student vaping nicotine or marijuana at school?
  2. Is the student at least 12 years old?
  3. Does the student have an email address and access to a phone?
Step 2: Consent

Explain the YVAPE program to the student and a parent or guardian. Obtain the signatures of the student and parent or guardian on the appropriate consent form.

  • Students 12-17 years old: assent and parental permission form
  • Students 18 years or older: consent form

Step 3: Enrollment

Enter the student into the program's web enrollment portal at www.yvape.org. Enrollment will require contact information for a school contact, the student, and a parent or guardian.

You will receive an enrollment confirmation email upon submission.

Step 4: Completion

You will receive an email when the student completes the program.

  • You will also be notified if the student fails to comply with the program.
Students
Step 1: Consent

Sign a form giving your consent to participate and give it to your school administrator (usually a principal or vice principal).

Step 2: Initial Call

Answer the call from your YVAPE coach (1-888-525-0122). You will talk to them for around 15-20 minutes about yourself and vaping and set up a time for a follow-up call.

Step 3: Videos & Discussion

Watch the videos. We encourage you to watch with your parent or guardian and discuss the questions with them. You can find the videos and discussion questions by clicking on the link provided in your videos email from YVAPE or by going to www.yvape.org/videos.

  • This activity will take about 15-30 minutes.
  • Video topics include marketing manipulation by the vaping industry, health effects of vaping, vaping marijuana, understanding motivation, and personal responsibility.
Step 4: Follow-up Call

Answer the call from your YVAPE coach (1-888-525-0122). You will talk with your coach for around 10 minutes about the videos and your discussion with your parent or guardian. You can also ask any questions you may have.

Step 5: Follow-up Survey

Complete a short online follow-up survey by clicking on the link included in your follow-up survey email or text message from YVAPE. This should only take about 5 minutes.

Step 6: Completion

You will receive a certificate of completion in your program completion email from YVAPE and your school will be notified of your completion.

Parents
Step 1: Consent

Sign a permission form if your child is younger than 18. Give the signed form to your child's school administrator (usually a principal or vice principal).
